Gemma and Jess have been friends forever. Gemma is always getting herself into one mess after another and Jess is always there to make her laugh about it afterwards. His life however is far from perfect. While he's popular in school, despite Gemma's original assumptions, his family life is on the brink of disaster and only Gemma can help him get past it. But are two best friends who have leaned on one another for years meant to be more than friends? Or can even the strongest of friendships drift over time? All in all I really enjoyed reading this book. It was well-written, humorous, relatable, and a fast and easy read. The characters are likable, the relationships built up gradually over time. You never feel as if the story is being forced. Jess is the kind of friend every girl wanted in high school. The straight version of a gay best friend that you could actually see yourself ending up with one day.
I did however have a few issues with the book, but mostly based on my own personal high school experiences. Gemma gave into peer pressure way too easily for my taste. She seemed a bit naïve at times when it was pretty obvious to me as the read what was going on. And as I told my husband after reading the book, this was one of those books where the best friends like each other but no one says anything. Had it been me I would have said, "Hey, you're lookin' at me. I'm lookin' at you. We like each other...let's make out." I didn't fall in love with my best friend though so I know that the evolution of such a relationship might be hard to detect or deal with. For me, I saw a guy I didn't know, got a strange feeling that he was it for me, and went for it. Despite my usual shy demeanor and non-actions prior. But again...not everyone's the same.
With that said, it isn't an original theme for YA love stories but I believe it is a really relatable story. Most of the time it's the guy who you lean on, the one who's kind and understanding, the one your mom thinks you should end up with who is really "the one". The book has some great messages and real characters that I think people can really invest themselves in.

Second Kiss Gemma and Jess Natalie Palmer 9781616637675 Books Reviews
I ordered this for my 17 year old daughter. She said it was a good book. It got here quickly.
Best friends that should be more. That is what this book started with. I loved the interaction between the two main characters and was rooting for them. I love the title. When the first kiss isn't what you expected then sometimes the second kiss is the one you remember.
I loved Jess and Gemma's story. I am so glad to hear there is a sequel. Jess and Gemma are so cute. I wish I had a best friend like that in high school. It was clean and wonderful story. I loved the characters and conflict. I couldn't put it down!
I throughly enjoyed this book. I ended up reading it in one day! Gemma and Jess are both likable characters, although some of the secondary characters weren't as throughly detailed. Some of Gemma's actions were a little unbelievable, regardless of her age, but it was easy to chuckle right along. Each moment that Gemma and Jess spent together was thoughtfully detailed and special. It just felt right.
I wasn't sure I wanted to buy this book because it didn't have a lot of reviews but I am glad I did! I was so into the book that my mom came storming into my room because apparently she had been yelling my name for 15 minutes. I was so absorbed, I was oblivious to my surroundings. I loved the charactors and especailly the relationship between Jess and Gemma. Jess's home life isn't a good one but everytime he needs Gemma, she's there and ready with and embarrassing story to tell him to divert his attention. Second Kiss has some twists that I didn't see coming and it kept me on my feet. It's a definant must read and I'm looking forward to a sequiel!
Second Kiss is a truly delightful, charming and absolutely worthwhile read about friendship (or more), family, dealing with the pain that comes when tragedy occurs, finding/making friends and growing up. I adored each and every word of it!
I immediately connected with Gemma. Her problems were a little like my problems when I was 14-15 years old. Okay, who am I kidding, I still find myself in the most awkward situations even though my teen years are way behind me. And Jess... *sigh* He was the perfect boy next door and a really good friend (or more) to Gemma (and vice versa).
I just have an important request for Natalie Palmer.
Pleeeaase write two more books--one from Jess' point of view; and the other, a sequel to Second Kiss! It would be very interesting to learn more about Jess' family, his abusive father, his high school experience, how he spent the summer and his feelings toward Gemma and in general.
And I utterly need a sequel because I would LOVE to read more about them and their third (and fourth, seventh, twentieth, ...) kiss.
I am so glad I gave this book a chance. It only had a few previous reviews but it was in my recommendations.
Second Kiss is a beautifully told love story between two best friends. Jess is the perfect guy that every mother wishes her daughter would find and every girl dreams about. He shares everything with Gem and never laughs at her or thinks less of her. He is considerate and kind.
Gem is a typical girl throughout the book. Jess is her best friend and most of the book is simply about their friendship and how they make it through some really terrible circumstances with each other.
It is refreshing to read a good clean novel about friendship and love. There aren't any outside crazy circumstances to what is going on with them. It is just a natural evolution with the characters.
I am dearly hoping that there is a sequel to this story because I don't feel like Jess and Gem have finished their story. I also really want to see what happens after the last scene in the book.
Overall, I give it a 4/5.
