I spotted this book on a Target display claiming "If you liked Night Circus, try this book." I loved Night Circus, and while this book is not supernatural, the era and atmosphere are similar. The Typewriter Girl has a definite appeal in relating life at the turn of the last century to today... a girl stuck in the typing pool at an insurance company, a lecherous boss who harasses her, a lover in the next dep't. down the hall who has to pretend not to know her, co-workers who don't speak to her because of rumors of said lover (which happen to be true). Betsey is ambitious and refreshingly unapologetic about her sexual past. Case in point? She actually had an affair with her typing teacher so she could practice on the typewriter in his apartment after he fell asleep! When clients come to the office for a meeting about insuring a high-rent amusement park/pier/hotel far from London up England's coast, Mr. Jones (a head honcho) is impressed by Betsey and offers to hire her to help manage the venture. Soon her awful typist job falls apart, and that's exactly what she does: takes the train up there, unannounced, to basically say "Here I am, and by the way, um, can you pay my train fare?" Because he is sweet on her, he does so and gets her settled into an office-of-sorts at the hotel, and arranges her board at a local rooming house. It was fun to see the similarities between what Betsey was doing--organizing company outings at the resort--and what today would be called "Marketing Communications." Certain men at the company resent a woman in a managerial position, and when Betsey attends a Board Meeting the men become flustered since they've never seen a woman enter a board room "without carrying a tray."
Betsey does well at her new position, which makes one realize how many people who are stuck in dead-end jobs would do well at something more challenging. Semi-spoiler alert: a disaster on the grand opening of the new pier changes the trajectory of the story, which disappointed me. But I enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Betsey and Jones, the creation of a fantastical business venture, and Betsey's part in promoting it. I would recommend this book.

The wring is very acceptable but I found the characters lacking in depth. I understand the typewriter girl's firing and her need for a new start but what is her new employers motivation? He sees her one time across a room filled with women doing the same job and he feels the need to stake his professional life on her? Please. His character and that of his partner and fiancé are written too shallowly. I expecteded more.
This book was really good. I am hoping to find another as good to read next. I highly recommend it
I consider myself fairly intelligent and as a reader, of the voracious variety. I got a few chapters into this book and had to stop. It gave me a headache. I'm not kidding, a headache. Don't know if the author was trying to prove something with this writing style or not, but it was painful. I had to read and reread so many sentences and paragraphs to grasp the intended meaning. She would also jump around. A lot. There was no flow, no congruence, which made for a very annoying read. I was really hoping to enjoy this book too. With not having read the whole book I don't feel I can really say much about the characters, but for the brief time I knew Betsey, she was annoying .
This is the best book I have read in a long time. The characters were interesting and true to life. I would recommend it for anyone who likes to read. You don't have to be a big fan of historical books. It works well on all levels.
Wasn't crazy about the opening of this book, but once it got going, I enjoyed it. The writing is very solid and the story is intriguing.

I enjoyed the story that offered a twist to the age-old story of star-crossed lovers. Learning about customs and mores of that time period added to my interest, but it was hardly a knock-your-socks-off kind of story. A nice quick read w. a little education included.
