Whispering Rock Virgin River Book 3 Robyn Carr 9780778324492 Books

Another action packed book. Jack's youngest sister, Brie, is a ADA and she is having a hard year. Her husband has left her for her best friend and she loses a big case against a serial rapist. This fella then flaunts the case loss by raping and beating Brie in her driveway. Mike helps her through the pain and eventually their relationship grows.

There seems to be a date rapist in the community as several high school girls are coming to Mel for exams with stories of going to a party, drinking a few beers and passing out. Then coming to and finding underwear on inside out or backwards; or with nursing and slot of soreness, like they had bad sex only they do not remember it.

Mike is asked to be the town constable and one of the first things he does is start looming for the high school culprit.

As with the previous books there is a lot going on; you will laugh out loud, you might even cry (I did), but you will be wrapped up in the story and not want to put it down. A definite must read.

Whispering Rock Virgin River Book 3 Robyn Carr 9780778324492 Books Reviews

Reviewed at Another Look Book Reviews

Whispering Rock is an emotionally filled book with a wonderful continuation of the River River characters.

I am really liking this series. Each book is filled with various revolving stories from the new characters and updates from the previous characters. I like that. I like that a lot. I love to fall in love with characters and I can get annoyed when I never hear from them again (even though I am reading a series). I bet the author Robyn Carr has a massive spreadsheet to keep track of where everyone is in their fictional lives because there are many mini stories within the one main plotline. Not to busy to get confused though. The town of Virgin River is perfectly orchestrated.

Mike and Brie are an excellent couple. As they are both victims of a violent crime, they support each other and help each other heal. I liked that Robyn Carr realistically writes that it takes time for them to heal and that there are many steps to recovery along the way. It is not a quick spring back when you've been shot 3 times or brutally raped. I also like the pace of each book.

The author seems to be in no rush just to make things happen or create an event. Paige and Preacher is a great example. They are trying for a baby in Whispering Rock and I loved that she does not get pregnant out of one night of passion. Instead it becomes a story and it takes a bit of time. I don't feel rushed. I can just sit back and enjoy the story and their journey.

Jack and Mel make a heavy presence in Whispering Rock which is just awesome. Of course Brie is Jack's sister so it was easily predicted that he would be around a lot. Still, Jack and Mel received a lot of their own story too. Let's face it, I am fan of these couples so I like to read about them.

A few new characters were introduced. I am for sure looking forward to more on their story. Paul, Matt and Vannie's story is what got the tears out of me. Very emotional. Not to mention the update on Lilly Anderson. *grabs more kleenex*
I also am interested in the Tom Booth storyline. He seems so mature for only seventeen. He seems to have quite a career ahead of him. So put together for such a young man.

The next story is a Christmas story and it will seem odd reading about Christmas in July but I am way to anal about reading books in order to pass it over. Plus with these books not really being stand alones, I need to see what is up with the Virgin River cast.

Teasers Ovulation Day!, Spanish to English interpretations, VCR tape of a birth (LOL!), roofie drug bust
This is not a bad book it just isn't my thing. The writing is good but there were just too many things that I personally didn't like.

1) The main story/characters don't get the majority of the book they share it with several side stories.

2) I like hearing about previous characters in the series but I wanted more Mike and Brie.

3) Way to much talk about pregnancies, breast feeding, contraception etc.

4)A mid-wife/nurse practitioner who doesn't know she's pregnant twice

5)Teen-ange angst. It was really well written I just don't particular care to read a teen love story.

So bottom line a lot of people will really enjoy this book and I can see why it just isn't for me.
THE STORY Brie Sheridan is a woman who has been thrust into despair. Her husband has left her for her best friend. She failed to get a conviction of a serial rapist who has now come after her. Recovering from her own rape, Brie feels like her world has fallen apart. Just at this juncture in her life, she begins a friendship with Mike Valenzuela. Mike is a friend of Brie's older brother and has the reputation as a womanizer with two failed marriages behind him. Mike has come to Virgin River recovering from being shot thus ending his career as a LAPD officer. Brie and Mike both find that life goes on as they begin to rebuild their shattered lives.

OPINION I loved the story between Brie and Mike which had the possibility of being dark and painful. While both of them come from a place of sadness, there is a sense of hope from the moment that the two begin to interact. Rather than dwelling on the pain, this book focuses on the hope and the rebuilding that both characters have to accomplish.

The story takes these characters challenges seriously. There is no magical recovery for Brie who is recovering from both her ex-husband's betrayal of her trust and also from her rape at the hands of a man she failed to convict. She believes that she failed herself even as she intellectually knows that she was the victim. I would have liked to have heard more about Brie's therapy and counseling in the aftermath of her rape because it was mentioned and then dropped.

I also liked the story about the date rapist who Mike is trying to discover. I thought that it was a nice counterpoint to Brie's rape and allowed for the beginning of some new romances amongst the teenage crowd in Virgin River.

WORTH MENTIONING I like how this series continues the love stories of couples from prior books instead of shuffling them off to the side and focusing only on new characters. It makes this series feel more vibrant because the town feels real and alive.

FINAL DECISION I loved the story between Brie and Mike. This book is more than one romance, it is a window into the entire town.

CONNECTED BOOKS WHISPERING ROCK is the third book in the Virgin River series. It can be read as a standalone although there are connecting and overlapping stories that continue from book to book. This book is better read after the first two books in the series.

STAR RATING I give this book 4.25 stars.
