The characters come to life in this portrayal of pre ww2 Berlin. Radulf, the main character, for all his arrogance and posturing develops into a complex villan of sorts. So much so that you want to see him succeed in his machinations and manipulation of others. It's as if he's the epitome of that small guilty pleasure of contempt we feel when we see others cowed by external sources and can't figure out how to escape. The author breathes life into the setting as well, making it feel as if he's been there. This book was a great read and comes with my utmost recommendation.
