This wasn’t a great book, nor was it a bad one. It was slightly above the middle of the two extremes.

At first, I didn’t care for J. J. Graves, the main character, but she grew on me over the course of the book, due in part to her slightly off-kilter way of describing things. Liking the MC is critical for me to enjoy a book. Offsetting that was her obsession with sex and getting laid. It was cute and a bit funny at first but quickly became tiring.

Hart filled the town of Bloody Mary with a host of stock characters. Everyone seems to have a lover. The women all gossip. The men all are broad-shouldered and strong. The local reporter is obnoxious. The councilman loves to throw his weight around.

There were quite a few places in the story where there were gaps in the narration that took me out of the flow of the story.

The ending here is from the ‘Where did that come from?’ school of climaxes. While Hart brings the guilty party on-stage early, nothing in the rest of the book gives the reader a hint this person might be the killer. That is the author not playing fair with the reader.

There were scads of production errors in this download – wrong words, missed words, wrong tenses, and the like. Those kinds of small (but all too common) errors should have been at thing of the past long before now. Come on, Amazon, you can do better.

I wouldn’t put the other books in this series on my ‘Must Read’ list, but pick them up if I come across them.

The heroine is a funeral director and the small town coroner and gets involved with murder investigations. This story has too many shortcomings. Why is she involved in solving the crimes? The reasons given by the killer at the end of the story, do not justify the crimes. Given who the killer turns out to be, there should have been plenty of indications as to who it was well before the ending. The town is one in which it seems that almost everyone is having some kind of affair with someone else! Overall, a very weak "thriller."
The first few chapters had me confident that I would enjoy this read. However, as the novel moved along, the plot seemed to lose its way. I was looking for a light read, so I completed the book and was interested enough to go on to the second book in the series. I am quite disappointed in the next installment as the plot is uninteresting and the characters remain one dimensional. Continuity in a series is very important. Not the case here, as the lead character went from being a person in whom the town was interested and seemingly protective to the butt of all the town gossip. Add to that, the idea that so many murders would occur in a small town, stated as being "safe". I will not be reading any other books in the series and am having difficulty getting through the second book. I put it down and have no desire to pick it up again; never a good thing for an author who wants to capture the reader's interest and motivate them to purchase the entire series.
The protagonist is a second year medical resident who abandons her residency and education in that profession to take up the family mortician business and is said to be appointed as a coroner where she lives in Virginia, and to perform post-mortems on the sudden spate of murdered villagers. Between description of murders there is a steady soliloquy on her urge to have sexual intercourse despite her only two unsatisfactory prior experiences, not to be compared with those of her friend the sheriff whose principal occupation seems to be seduction.
In 1946, the State of Virginia was among the first to replace coroners with Medical Examiners and that title of coroner has not existed in that State for half a century; Medical Examiners perform all the autopsies of forensic concern, such autopsies are never left to physicians without specific training in pathology.
If you enjoy reading about unsatisfied sexual needs this might be the book for you. If, however, you prefer a modicum of verisimilitude in your murder and mystery fiction, you might prefer to look elsewhere.
Well to start, I found it a bit irritating that she whined about being so cold in her bedroom she could see her breath since the heat was set at ONLY 65.....wha?
Then when she met the writer and mentioned he made her nipples hard and moisture between her thighs....I knew this wasn't my kind of mystery....pity they feel the need for this when the story itself should be enough.
This book had the potential to be Five Stars but failed miserably. The author would start an interesting thread to further spice up the plot, but then dropped the ball by not explaining or developing said thread. For example, they finally open the safe deposit box...a letter addressed to the possible murder suspect from the victim. THE AUTHOR NEVER EXPLAINED THE LETTER, IT WAS NOT "READ" in the story.....what the heck and it was never mentioned again. There were other missteps...the first murdered character was described as a "Sadist" because she enjoyed being "hurt" during sex....well...a Sadist enjoys hurting someone...she was a Masochist.....as in S and M. Just a minor glitch....but gee...get the facts straight. Also...many grammatical errors and editing blips...for instance the main character had indigestion from a chili dog on one page...same chapter her indigestion is because of a corn dog. I could overlook these mistakes and actually thought the plot was good.....somewhat predictable but written in an interesting way. I probably would have read through the series. UNTIL THE LAST CHAPTER...it left so many open plot lines and left more questions than answers, AND the story simply ended. How did the character portrayed as an author, figure out who the murderer was? How did the open, unsolved murders with the same MO in other states tie into these murders? Did the murdered commit those? How did the Police Chief arrive just in time to save the coroner? What really was the motive for the spree killings?.And so on???? Come on...so disappointed. Will only continue series if it is free. So glad I didn't pay for this one.
